My Plastic Free Beauty Bar Routine With Ethique

One of the very first ‘eco-swaps’ I ever made was from plastic shampoo bottles to bars. Specifically: Ethique. I was nervous at first, and to be honest, incredibly confused as I ran a bar through my hair instead of lathering up liquid! What a weird concept. But from that day forward (I wish I remember the exact date!) I’ve slowly switched my beauty products to Ethique bars where possible, and using plastic bottles seems like a distant memory. I’ll never ever go back.

  • Palm Oil Free

To date, Ethique have diverted 3.3 million plastic bottles from being made and disposed of into landfills.

As you may have picked up, Ethique are not your simple beauty brand who sell products to you mindlessly. They’re what I call an ‘activist brand’ who use beauty bars as a way to spread a wider message: Plastic is not okay, and we have to stop using it.

As a long time Ethique obsessor, I’m SUPER proud to partner with the Ethique team to bring you reviews, updates, and general beauty bar goodness. Working with a brand I use daily… a dream come true.

The best way to kick off: a review of my most commonly used Ethique bars - and even my mum’s shampoo of choice!

Bliss Bar - Face Cleanser

I’m always skeptical about trying new face washes; there are so many things that can go wrong. That awful skin tightness, excess ‘sleepy dust’ in your eyes when you wake up in the morning after washing your face at night, and even increased redness if the product is too harsh.

This is not the case with the Bliss Bar.

I use the Bliss Bar to clean my skin in the morning and evening, and also take my makeup off (if I wear it!). It is super gentle, but removes makeup efficiently. I adore the coconut smell, so if you’re a coconut lover, this is especially for you!

I travelled with the Bliss Bar to Melbourne earlier this year. I cut a small chunk off my bar (as you can see in the pictures above) and carried it with my shampoo and conditioner in a metal container. It kept really well, and suited travelling light- no bulky plastic bottles of cleanser.

The Guardian - Conditioner

Someone once asked me what my favourite Ethique product was. I answered in half a second: The Guardian Conditioner. This is one of the very first Ethique products I ever bought, and will be a forever staple in my shower. Perhaps it’s the way it lasts two of us up to 5 months, or how it glides along my hair so easily. The Guardian is so luxurious, it feels like wizardry!

This conditioner is especially for those with dry or damaged hair, but even though I’ve never had major issues with any of these things, it’s the one for me.

Heali Kiwi - Shampoo

The Heali Kiwi is my shampoo of choice. After trialling many over the last 2.5 years (there’s no one size fits all when it comes to shampoo), I’ve definitely settled on this. My husband has too.

The Heali Kiwi is aimed at those susceptible to dandruff or scalp problems. It eliminates any chance of having an itchy scalp, and when my husband once used another brand of shampoo bar, dandruff quickly appeared. This is truly the stuff!

Goodbye Head and Shoulders: the Heali Kiwi is far better for your body and the planet.

Since using the Heali Kiwi, I also haven’t needed to wash my hair so regularly. I used to wash my hair every second day, but now it’s just once or twice a week. The Heali Kiwi seems to allow my own hair oils to ‘do their thing’, and this means I save on shampoo too!

Sweet Orange & Vanilla Body Wash

Introducing: the body wash of my dreams (and probably your dreams too). I’m not sure if you can imagine the smell of sweet orange and vanilla, but MAN it’s good. I’ve never wanted to eat a body wash so badly.

I’ve always used plain soaps when it comes to washing my body in the shower, but this Ethique Body Wash has totally upped my shower game. It doesn’t foam very much, like a usual soap, but it leaves your skin clean and smooth.

Gingersnap - Exfoliator

The Gingersnap will exfoliate like nobody’s business. Take it from someone who’s used it twice a week for around 2 years: you’ll never meet another exfoliator like it. It’s oh so satisfying to rub on your face, as it gets to work quickly and rubs away dead skin. It has never left me with a raw feeling or red look, and the ginger smell screams FRESH- the exact type of smell you want in an exfoliator.

The Frizz Wrangler - Shampoo

I’ve never had problems with my hair being frizzy, so when I was sent a wee sampler, I passed it onto my mum for the ultimate trial. In the past she’s been a tough critic when it comes to beauty products, so I was stoked to hear she loves it!

Mum commented on how well it foams up, and since using The Frizz Wrangler, she’s converted to the Wonderbar Conditioner too- she’s becoming an Ethique addict, just like her daughter.

As a rule, I only work with brands I love, use, and can whole heartedly back. I send the brand a large list of questions to answer first, and trial the product properly before saying yes to anything.
