Bohome & Roam: A Brand With A Social Conscience
I'm all for brands with beautiful product, but with the state of our world right now, a brand selling beautiful things simply doesn't cut it for me. Brands have the responsibility to use their power in a socially conscious way. It's for this reason that I found Bohome & Roam a year ago, and haven't left their side since.
Bohome & Roam sell GORGEOUS product, all whilst making an incredible impact on our global community, in so many ways that us consumers would never know. I'm honoured to call founder, Aimee, of Bohome & Roam, a great friend of mine (our Snapchat streaks are high). It's about time I told you just exactly who and what Bohome & Roam is.
My husband, Tim, recently created a new adjective, saying "oh that's so bohome!" Bohome & Roam are a bohemian inspired lifestyle brand, offering homeware and accessories. Bohome & Roam have taken over the bohemian flare in my wardrobe, and yes, "bohome" is now an adjective in our household that describes something beautifully made and bohemian- feel free to adopt it too.
Power couple, Aimee and Dave, along with their fearless 2 year old, founded Bohome & Roam in 2016. When I asked Aimee exactly why and how it came about, she shared an inspiring anecdote:
Roaming through Mexico, Aimee and Dave found themselves in the little town of San Juan Chamula. A girl, no older than 3 or 4, approached the pair with a tiny crocheted turtle to sell. Being savvy travellers, Aimee and Dave spent time bartering for the item, in the true experienced traveller way that so many of us can relate to. After arguing for several minutes over only a few cents, the little girl walked off in a huff, disappointed in their efforts to lower the price, and knowing her work wasn't worth it.
Suddenly, Aimee and Dave were hit with a wave of realisation. Here they were, travelling on holiday, bartering for an item that probably took hours to make, and fighting to keep money that would have meant the world to the little girl, but never have been missed by them. With this realisation, Aimee and Dave grew their existing love of well-made products, into a desire to see that the people who made them are respected, valued, and paid fairly for their talents and skills. Bohome & Roam (and their munchkin Georgia!) was born.
From here, Aimee spent (and still spends) hours upon hours researching organisations who hit their strict standards, and even visits the suppliers overseas. Bohome & Roam work with suppliers and artisans in India, Cambodia, Uganda, Senegal, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Mali, Ethiopia, and Turkey. They have close relationships with the suppliers, making sure fair working standards are always kept, and that they use sustainable materials where possible.
Bohome & Roam exist to not only support global artisans, but strive to respect their customers too. They price their products in a way that is fair to consumers, sticking to a consistent price scheme, which doesn't involve frequent sales, but reflects a fair representation of cost. When brands have crazy sales every week, don't you wonder how much the product actually costs them to make? Sales can feel like playing games with companies who tease you. Frequent sales don't build trust. Bohome & Roam focus on making the buying experience fair for designers, makers, suppliers, and consumers. Everyone involved is respected; if only all consuming experiences were like this!
When you buy a Bohome piece, you're most likely to have had it on your wish list for a long time, and this is exactly what Bohome wish for you to do. Spontaneous shopping and impulse buys, only result in more 'stuff' that clutters your home and gathers dust. Your purchases should add value to your life, and if you covet an item for long enough, and then decide you'll buy it, it's more likely you'll cherish it forever.
